Attorney Profile
Michael M. Amir is the co-founder of Doll Amir & Eley LLP. He represents a variety of clients, including banks, health organizations, educational organizations (universities and schools), large national corporations, medium-sized companies and individuals.
Mr. Amir currently represents some of California’s largest health care companies in a variety of cases, including a number of multi-million dollar business disputes against hospitals, RICO claims against one of California’s largest hospital chains and wrongful termination cases involving claims of discrimination, retaliation and harassment. In the last few years alone, Mr. Amir has obtained millions of dollars on behalf of clients in cases ranging from intellectual property disputes (trade secret misappropriation, trademark infringement and copyright infringement) to contract disputes. On the defense side, Mr. Amir has successfully defended clients at all phases of litigation, including trial. The following reflects some of Mr. Amir's notable representations:
- Obtained a complete defense decision in a state court trial on behalf of a major university in a discrimination and breach of contract case.
- Obtained a complete defense verdict in a wrongful termination/retaliation trial on behalf of a Silicon Valley software company.
- Obtained a seven-figure settlement amount and attorneys’ fees on behalf of a bank who had been sued by another bank for trademark infringement.
- Defeated a request for a preliminary injunction in a highly-publicized copyright action on behalf of one of the most popular online personalities.
- Obtained a defense verdict in a federal trial on behalf of a former NBA star in a breach of contract and fraud case.
- Obtained a complete defense verdict in a five-week jury trial where the Plaintiffs sought millions alleging fraud and breach of contract in connection with a real property dispute.
- Obtained a writ of mandate in an unprecedented, high-stakes case against one of the largest counties in the country. In that case, the Los Angeles Superior Court ordered the county to reverse its decision to revoke the charter of Mr. Amir’s client, a charter school with multiple campuses. Without the decision, the school would have had to close its doors.
- Obtained a seven-figure settlement on the eve of trial on behalf of individual client who had sued his former employer.
- Obtained a dismissal of an intellectual property dispute at the pleading stage in a case where Plaintiffs sought damages in excess of $100 million.
- Successfully defended a trademark action for a major record label.
- Defeated a request for a preliminary injunction in a case alleging misappropriation of trade secrets and trademark infringement.
- Obtained a complete defense verdict on behalf of an executive for a major grocery chain in a federal white collar criminal defense case where the grocery chain had pleaded guilty and paid $70 million in fines and restitution. Even though the trial lasted almost a month, the jury deliberated for less than five hours before returning a “not guilty” verdict on all counts against Mr. Amir’s client. If convicted, Mr. Amir’s client would have faced up to 30 years in federal prison. The Los Angeles Daily Journal called the verdict “stunning”.
In 2010 and 2011, Los Angeles Magazine and Southern California Super Lawyers named Mr. Amir
a “Super Lawyer.” In May of 2011, the Litigation Counsel of America (“LCA”) – a highly selective and by invitation only trial lawyer honorary society composed of less than one-half of one percent of American lawyers – inducted Mr. Amir as a Fellow. In 2008, he was a panelist at the Loyola Law School Entertainment & Sports Law Society’s symposium regarding copyright issues. Later in the year, he was a panelist at the Los Angeles County Bar Association’s Corporate Law Annual Seminar in Rancho Mirage. In March 2006, he was featured in an exclusive interview on the Forbes Radio program “America’s Best Lawyers” to discuss intellectual property rights in the workplace. Mr. Amir has published numerous articles in the Los Angeles Daily Journal.
Prior to co-founding Doll Amir & Eley LLP, Michael Amir practiced law at the Los Angeles office of Gibson Dunn & Crutcher LLP and the Los Angeles office of O’Brien Zarian LLP (now Arent Fox).
Mr. Amir served as an extern for Justice Arthur Gilbert, California Court of Appeal (2d District) and for the United States District Judge Susan Illston (N.D. Cal.). He is a graduate of the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, where he was a Member and Executive Project Manager of the Hastings Constitutional Law Quarterly.
He is a member of the Intellectual Property Section of the State Bar of California, a member of the Association of Business Trial Lawyers (Los Angeles Chapter) and a member of the California Society of Healthcare Attorneys.
